Hello, my name is Mª Cruz and I’m the star of Umpalumpa’s group this week.
I’m going to compare the 3 projections into the following countries: Spain and Argentina.
Spain has 504.645 km² while Argentina has 2,766,890 km2. As we can see, Argentina has more extension than Spain.
Firstly we've got Robinson's projection.
This projection shows the whole world in a plan. It has a lot of advantages and disadvantages.
It is not consistent. Meridians are curved gently; however the poles are stretched in long lines.
It affects countries that are closer to the meridian and Ecuador, countries away Meridian expanded and countries near the centre remain the same.
Argentina is more stretched because of the poles, while Spain remains the same.
Secondly it is Mercator's projection:
In this projection, shapes of the continents are respected but sizes not.
This system of projection is called: ``content´´, angles formed as they are in the original figure.
It
is an idealized model that treats the earth as an inflatable balloon
that is inserted into a cylinder and is starting to "inflate" occupying
the volume of the cylinder.
In this projection looks that
Spain occupies more territory because Europe seem to be bigger than it
is, when in fact Argentina is much bigger than Spain.
Finally we've got Azimuthal projection:
In
azimuthal projection, shapes and angles are not respected. The
sdistorsion of angels and areas grows with the farther from the center
of the map.
This projection is a geographical projection characterized by a radial symmetry around the centre point.
This projection can see the earth from above. Spain looks very small and Argentina looks bigger.
During
the realization of this task, there has been a debate about what
projection could be the best for being used in a classroom.
Although all
of the members of the group know that anyone represents exactly the
reality, we finally reach the conclusion that one of the best projection for being used
in a classroom is the theory of Robinson because we can see the whole
world in a plan. This projection has more advantages than disadvantages. On the other hand the projection of Mercator is that we
have studied at school and it is the most familiar for us but this
projection have lot of disadvantages because it reinforces the idea of
Europe as the center of the world, also we think that the projection of
Azimuthal distorts the reality.
Now I'm going to talk about things that distors to the reality.
We have
considered that one of the biggest media that distorts the reality is
the television, in which we often found insufficient information or
omission of this and the premeditated deformation of news that mislead.
To
mitigate the effects in our classes that TV produces, we should educate
children not to believe everything they see in it, and question the
news, series or programs they see. We should ensure that they have a
critical spirit and they compare and investigate information on the
subject before believing what they see.
In addition, we in class,
if we have to bring them a video, we should do what we ask for them,
and look for one that is objective, clear and precise, one that we have
contrasted previously.
So we have chosen as "distorting" television
because their programs, series and documentaries often gets us to create
a determined idea about some things. They always put sounds, photos,
testimony that they want, etc, to get that we think as they want. To be
more specific about what we have chosen, we have thought a TV program,
Tierra Hostil en Colombia. In summary, in this program, talks about
Colombia and only shows negatives aspects, giving way to that society
creates that image is common in Colombia. Coincidentally home of one of
the team members, working a Colombian girl and according to this the
program does not show anything that has Colombia but only the negative.
These are the questions that we have posed to her:
Do you feel identified with the program?
How was your life there?
As we have seen before media isn't neutral and in
our opinion this slogan is strongly related to this acitivity for media
such as television manipulate people personality. In addition each TV
channel has a different ideology and manipulates information to promote
their ideology and thereby convince people of things that are not true.
Finally I'm going to name a sample online treasure hunt: U.S. Westward Expansion
Earliest
settlers to the West often walked up to 2,000 miles barefoot, taking
nearly six months to complete the journey. This online expedition,
however, avoids typical traveling hardships of the past and blazes your
trail back into the Old West, introducing you to diverse explorers and
historic landmarks along the way.
Use the pre-screened Web sites in the "Resource Bank" to answer the following questions. We can see in the screen.
Some of these questions are:
- Describe Sacagawea's role in the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Link to "People in the West" at New Perspectives on the West.
- Illustrate how the relationship between Native American tribes and
emigrant settlers changed over time. Discuss possible causes for this
change. Look at "All About the Trail" in The Oregon Trail Web site.
Putting It All Together
Review
the Treasure Hunt questions and your answers. What do you think were
the successes and failures (if any) of U.S. westward expansion? What
evidence can you give to support your statements?
I don't need that you write everything you say in class into the post, BUT would be great if you show in this the resources you have developed for it, embed the video, showing the maps and so on... Remark the work that you have done!!
ResponderEliminarVery good improvement from last week.
